“Metaphysics of the Echo” is a video installation made of video, experimental sound and recited poetry. It is Jana Nikolovska’s seventh solo exhibition — and the first in which her verses are brought before an audience.

The echo is the quietest form of presence. It does not speak of itself, but of something that has already disappeared.

The echo is a meeting between what has vanished and what will not let it pass.

But the echo does not last forever. That is its most important quality. Every return is weaker than the one before. Every repetition loses a little — of clarity, of strength, of the body of the voice.

By its nature, the echo moves toward its own fading. That is not its flaw. It is its grace.

An echo can end in two ways. It can exhaust itself, after many returns. Or something can enter the space and interrupt it.

That is why the echo is an exact image of what a person carries for years.

The verses were gathered over many years and have never before been shown to an audience. This is the first time they will be heard — and the last time they will echo.

That is not a paradox. It is the whole point. The words a person has carried the longest come to light precisely at the moment when some of them stop being true.

The exhibition speaks of the fading of one long echo. Of something that smouldered for years, that kept returning, weaker each time, and that finally stops returning. And when the last reverberation ends, what remains is silence — not emptiness, but a space in which, for the first time, something new can be heard.
